Whales

twitterstatus:

A number of users are seeing whales (over capacity messages) this morning.  We believe this is because our master database is still warming after a RAM upgrade over the weekend.  This may also explain some of the inconsistencies people are seeing on their timelines.

Are you fed up with seeing new gadgets that only use incompatible and restrictive audio and video formats? Did you know that it’s not a lack of technological know-how that causes this, but software patents and other legal restrictions? What’s the solution? Play Ogg! I like Ogg, but AAC and MP3 are open enough. If they start heavily restricting use of there formats, maybe then I’ll advocate use of the Ogg Vorbis format.

I have no real way to judge that. I personally think that parts of Microsoft certainly are sincere, and other parts are almost certainly not. It’s a pretty big and bloated company, and when one hand says it wants to participate in open source, I doubt the other hand knows or cares about it. -Linus Torvalds Finally, a sane quotes about Microsoft from somebody in OSS.

Editor’s note: Mozilla released a security and stability update for Firefox 2.x users today. Check out the Mozilla Developer News announcement reposted below for more details.

Firefox 2.0.0.16 security and stability update now available for download

As part of Mozilla Corporation’s ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 2.0.0.16 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older.html.

We strongly recommend that all Firefox 2.x users upgrade to this latest release. If you already have Firefox 2.x, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu.

For a list of changes and more information, please review the Firefox 2.0.0.16 Release Notes.

Note: Firefox 2.0.0.x will be maintained with security and stability updates until mid-December, 2008. All users are encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 3.

Just a fix for the same security issues that 3.0.1 fixed. I applaud Mozilla for fixing these issues. Many organizations are, for the time being, still using Firefox 2.x.

Linus Torvalds calls Diggers (and I quote) "Wanking Walruses"

This is by far the best story to come out of digg this entire year. It makes me proud to be a digger :)
